Trained facilitators and coaches are available to work with teachers on-site to develop and implement literacy skills (reading, writing, vocabulary, speaking, and listening) across the curriculum.
Workshops and coaching are customized according to the needs of the district schools’ administrators and teachers. Coaches may be secured to work with teachers through a full school term.

Knowing a word is more than knowing a definition, and different kinds of words require different learning strategies. These workshops will focus on empowering students with knowledge of core academic words related to content areas as well as to assessments. Instructional strategies that actively involve students while expanding their knowledge of academic vocabulary will be included, particularly those found in prompts encountered by students and those embedded in assessment questions.
Vocabulary’s link to comprehension has been extensively researched, and the importance of directly teaching vocabulary has been firmly established. The Common Core ELA standards stress the need to provide direct and explicit instruction for academic vocabulary. However, studies show that the teaching of vocabulary has not been frequent or systematic in schools. These professional learning opportunities will focus on research-based instructional methods.

Each discipline possesses its own language, purposes, and ways of using text that students need to understand. The DuPage ROE Literacy Team will help to identify the special reading and writing skills of specific subject areas, and will provide content area teachers with the necessary tools for student success.
