STEM is the integrated application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. First introduced in 2001, the four subject areas are combined into a single, interconnected discipline. This requires a significant shift from a teacher-focused classroom to one that requires students to be actively engaged in inquiry, exploration, and problem-solving. STEM learning goals closely align with the Common Core State Standards for ELA/Literacy and Mathematics and the Next Generation Science Standards.
A strong STEM experience is essential to successfully navigate and participate in our rapidly changing world. An environment of swift and noted change requires each of us to possess and hone a unique set of skills and understandings built on opportunities to learn, explore, and innovate. It is through this approach that we can best assist our young people to develop into responsible, capable, and confident citizens.
Through federal funding targeted for STEM and Career and Technical Innovation, the DuPage Regional Office of Education is committed to doing its part in the journey to graduate STEM ready students. The focus of the grant is to provide STEM learning and preparation opportunities to students, parents, and educators at the middle school level, particularly among underrepresented populations. Programs and events supported through the grant include student and parent events, outreach programs in area middle schools, a website, a newsletter, and professional development for educators.

On a practical level, STEM careers are among the fastest growing career areas and projected to grow at a faster rate than non-STEM careers. Overall, STEM employees earn higher salaries than non-STEM employees. Lower rates of unemployment exist among STEM workers than non-STEM workers. STEM careers offer rewards such as high levels of collaboration, innovation, and satisfaction.
STEM careers are more varied and diverse than one might think. A strong STEM education helps students develops skills, such as resiliency, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication, which will prepare them for all careers, and for life.
